Charlie B.
Charlie B. is the late, beloved wife of Coach Ed Temple. She played an invaluable role in the narrative of Coach Temple’s life and legacy, not
only as his devoted wife of fifty-seven years, but as a surrogate mother to hundreds of young women, both on and off the track at
Tennessee State University (TSU).
Charlie B. poured her life and her
influence into the women her husband coached, working with him to cultivate their character and sense of self as well as their athletic
abilities. Additionally, she instilled in the Tigerbelles an understanding of femininity and grace, and she served as a powerful
example of marital stability and commitment, worthy of emulation.
Charlie B. was a native of Hartsville, TN. She came to Nashville to enroll in Pearl High School, graduating in just three years. She received her
degree from TSU three years later. Following graduation, she married Coach Ed Temple, after meeting him in class during her junior year.
Coach and Mrs. Temple have two children, Bernard and Dr. Edwina R. Temple.
Charlie B. sacrificed endlessly, encouraged continuously, served tirelessly, and nurtured wholeheartedly—all without fame or public recognition.
